Accounting Today recently published “The 2023 VAR 100” (behind a paywall), their annual ranking of value-added resellers, by revenue, in the accounting software space.
We were pleased to see many Orchid Business Partners represented in the rankings. I’m sure they know who they are, so congratulations to all of you!
Chris Gaetano’s introduction to the list focused on “The mass migration to cloud computing” triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, as companies needed to quickly adapt to the new realities of remote and hybrid working. In his words: “The tools needed to support such models, such as communication, collaboration, and document sharing software, are most commonly cloud-based”.
We don’t deny the truth in this, and many of our Sage Intacct partners are successfully riding the cloud wave, but we don’t think it tells the whole story. For example:
We’ve seen little to suggest that any mass migration to the cloud is being fuelled by a mass exodus from Sage 300.
Any “Top 100” list, almost by definition, only shows the tip of the iceberg
For every VAR listed, there are scores of other successful, niche, customer-focused businesses that don’t have the revenue to make the ranking, or the inclination to put their names forward.
All successful VARs, large or small, know that value-adding means understanding and responding to the needs of their clients, often in creative and sophisticated ways.
Sage 300 users and consultants understand that cloud-enabled doesn’t need to mean cloud-native, and evolution can happen without revolution.
Tools like VPNs and RDP clients now provide secure, near-seamless access to on-premises software. These can be complemented by the judicious use of 3rd Party products that support the remote communication, collaboration, and document sharing that Gaetano advocates.
