Each year, IEEE Spectrum generates a ranking of the most popular programming languages. They try to make it as objective as possible by weighting and combining 11 metrics from eight sources. They have just announced their 2021 rankings via this article, and the winner is clear:
Python dominates as the de facto platform for new technologies.
Their biggest takeaway was a succinct two words. Learn Python! And they made it clear they aren’t just talking to full-blown tech-heads:
You don't have to become a dyed-in-the-wool Pythonista, but learning the language well enough to use one of the vast number of libraries written for it is probably worth your time.
Dozens of languages were ranked, all with their strengths and limitations, but what continues to set Python apart is that array of open-source libraries, from general utilities to those designed for highly specialized applications.
Embrace your Inner Snake with Orchid Extender
IEEE Spectrum admits this sea of libraries has the potential to be overwhelming, but there are lots of ways to safely dip your toes into those Python-infested waters. One of those is Orchid Extender.
Extender is a Python-based platform for customizing Sage 300. The Configurator Edition requires no programming at all. The Developer Edition lets you exploit the full power of Python, while being accessible to consultants and developers with different skill sets:
- Orchid Business Partners have access to our library of sample Extender Scripts, which can be downloaded, edited, and incorporated into your own Python code.
- The recently launched Extender Marketplace showcases a wide range of Extender Apps (Python customizations). It serves as a showcase for the creative uses that Extender has been put to by different Sage 300 developers. All the Apps are available from the developers, via our partner network.
