Python Leader of the Pack

Python declared “Leader of the Pack”

The 20-year reign of Java and C at the top of the TIOBE Index of programming language popularity is finally over.

We’ve been trumpeting the rise of Python, the scripting language used by Orchid Extender, for several years.

A prime source has been the TIOBE Index, a monthly snapshot of the world’s most popular programming languages. Last November our “Unstoppable” Python overtakes Java article announced that Python, by overtaking Java to take 2nd place, had ended a 20 year dominance by Java and C on the top two rungs of the TIOBE ladder.

This month, the seemingly inevitable occurred as Python took its final step to the summit. As the TIOBE team put it:

For the first time in more than 20 years we have a new leader of the pack: Python

Paul Jansen, CEO of TIOBE Software expanded on that:

Python, which started as a simple scripting language...has become mature. Its ease of learning, huge amount of libraries, and widespread use in all kinds of domains, has made it the most popular programming language of today. Congratulations Guido van Rossum!

Congratulations indeed, Guido! If that name means nothing to you, here's another article from our archives: On Guido van Rossum, the Father of Python.

And congratulations also to those at Orchid who convinced us to take a punt on Python all those years ago. Their faith has been rewarded, so...

Let's take time out to celebrate!

Let’s all take 2 minutes 55 seconds out of our busy days to step back in time to 1965, raise our voices and sing along with The Shangri-Las…
